GWANDA— A 43-year-old man from Humbane Village, under Chief Malaba in Gwanda, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for raping his 14-year-old stepdaughter.

The assault happened around 5:30 a.m. on June 29, 2025.

The man and the child were sleeping in the same room at the family home when the girl’s mother briefly stepped away.

The stepfather “took advantage of the situation and went on to rape the child,” according to a statement from the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).

The family reported the crime, and evidence presented in court confirmed the offence.

In delivering the sentence, the court said the man “violated the trust expected of a parent” and stressed that “such crimes cause lasting harm to children.”

The Magistrate imposed a 15-year custodial term, noting the gravity of the breach and the need for deterrence.

NPAZ urged communities to act quickly when they suspect abuse.

“Community members are urged to be vigilant, safeguard children, and promptly report any suspected cases of abuse,” the authority said.

Prosecutors credited the family for swiftly reporting the matter.
