SANYATI — A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for raping a 17-year-old girl at a business centre in Sanyati, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said in a statement.
The assault occurred in the early hours of April 10, when the man unlawfully entered the victim’s premises and sexually assaulted her.
The teenager later confided in a friend, who helped her report the matter to the police.
The case was heard at the Kadoma Regional Court, where the man was found guilty and sentenced to a custodial term of 15 years.
The NPAZ praised the victim’s courage in speaking out and emphasised the need for community vigilance and education around sexual violence.
“This case highlights the urgent need for community awareness, support for survivors, timely reporting, and legal action. Sexual offences are serious crimes,” the NPAZ said. “Let’s work together to create safe, respectful communities where every individual — especially young women and girls — can live free from fear.”
Sexual violence can occur in both public and private spaces, and more must be done to educate communities, support victims, and bring perpetrators to justice.
