A Mutare regional magistrate has sentenced a 29-year-old Odzi man to 15 years in prison after convicting him of raping his 5-year-old neighbour.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe announced the conviction and sentence in a bulletin dated May 19 2026.
The court heard that the offence occurred on March 25, 2026, at around 5:30 p.m. as the child walked home after playing at a nearby homestead.
It was alleged that the child passed through the offender’s homestead when he assaulted her.
The child told her parents about the assault the following day.
Her parents then reported the matter to the police, prosecutors said.
“Authorities referred the child for a medical examination, and prosecutors later presented the results in court as evidence,” read the statement in part.
The case adds to growing concern over sexual violence against children in Zimbabwe, where many cases come to light only after children disclose abuse to trusted adults.
Children’s rights advocates often urge parents, guardians, teachers and community members to create safe spaces where children can report abuse without fear, shame or intimidation.
“Families and communities must report suspected child sexual abuse to the police, social welfare officials or trusted child protection organisations immediately,” said social commentator Joeline Matsika.
