CHIRUMANZU, Zimbabwe — A 19-year-old woman from Chief Chirumanzu has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after abusing a 7-year-old girl in June this year, according to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ).
The sad incident happened in the afternoon as the young girl was walking home from school with her friend.
The woman, who was collecting firewood nearby, joined the two children and walked with them for a while.
She told them she wanted to play a game, then asked one of the children to go home.
She took the 7-year-old girl to a quiet place and violated her.
When the girl got home, she told her aunt what had happened.
The family reported the matter to the police, and the woman was quickly arrested.
The Gweru Regional Court later found the woman guilty and sentenced her to 15 years in prison.
The NPAZ praised the young girl for having the courage to speak out.
It said more children should be taught to report abuse, and more adults must listen and act.
“This case shows that we must always take children seriously when they say something is wrong,” the NPAZ said.
