MUTARE, Zimbabwe — A 25-year-old man was sentenced to three years in prison Wednesday after a magistrates’ court convicted him of statutory rape for having sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl.

The Mutare Magistrates’ Court suspended one year of the sentence on condition of good behaviour, leaving an effective two-year term.

The court withheld the man’s name to protect the victim’s identity.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, the offender, from the Zimunya area of Mutare, first approached the girl on August 11.

The assault occurred on August 26 around 2 p.m., when the victim visited his homestead.

“The offender invited the victim into his bedroom and sat on the bed. He then closed and locked the door, fondled the victim and had sexual intercourse with her,” the NPA said in a statement.

The case came to light after the girl returned home late and exhibited unusual behaviour. She initially refused to disclose the assault.

Her aunt later accompanied her to the police to file a report, leading to the man’s arrest.

The NPA emphasised the severity of such crimes.

“Sexual assault against young persons is a serious offence. Communities must ensure the safety of children at all times.”

Zimbabwean law sets the age of consent at 18.

Statutory rape is criminalised under the country’s Criminal Law Code, which protects minors from sexual exploitation regardless of apparent consent.

International child rights organisations have repeatedly stressed the damaging effects of such violence.

“Sexual violence against children remains a grave violation of their rights, with devastating immediate and long-term impacts on their physical and mental health,” UNICEF said in a 2023 report.

The U.N. agency estimates 15 million girls worldwide are forced into marriage annually, often resulting in significant physical and psychological harm.

Zimbabwe faces a severe child marriage crisis, with nearly 33% of girls married before turning 18, according to the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency.
