Dogs maul 13 year old girl to death

A 13-year-old girl was recently mauled to death by three vicious dogs in Nyabira, Zvimba District, police said Wednesday.

The victim, Caroline Chari, was walking home from school with four classmates at St Mannocks Farm when the marauding dogs attacked.

The children fled in different directions, but the animals pursued and caught Chari, fatally injuring her.

Police said they arrested the owner of the three dogs, Gift Jambaya, 50, after preliminary checks showed the animals were last vaccinated in 2024 and that the owner ignored the Department of Veterinary Services’ 2025 rabies vaccination outreach.

Investigators said more details will be released as the case proceeds.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is disturbed by the trend of vicious dogs being allowed to move without a leash, guidance or being kept loose by owners,” ZRP spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.

The ZRP said it has intensified joint operations with SPCA inspectors, local authorities and the Ministry of Health and Child Care to impound stray dogs and enforce public-safety measures.

Recent Zimbabwe cases show the pattern.

In July this year, 9-year-old Shelton Panganai from Zvimba was mauled to death by four Boerboels that chased children playing football; the owner was arrested for keeping dangerous dogs.
The previous month, a primary school boy from Marlbrough in Harare, suffered serious neck, back and stomach injuries after three dogs—two Boerboels and a Rottweiler—attacked him on his way to school.
Moleen Ndlovu, 6, was killed by her landlord’s two Boerboels inside a rented yard in Bulawayo in 2022.
