GOKWE, Zimbabwe — Police in Gokwe have arrested an 18-year-old woman in connection with the death of her 3-year-old stepson, a case that has shocked residents in the area.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the arrest, adding that the suspect, Sharai Foromani, was taken into custody following an incident reported on February 13 at Madzura Village.

According to police, the child went to a bushy area behind the family’s homestead to relieve himself.

Police allege the teenager followed him and strangled him.

Police said the motive is not yet known.

The boy’s body was taken to Gokwe Hospital mortuary, where a post-mortem examination is expected to establish the official cause of death, police said.

Police did not immediately release further details on what led to the arrest, and it was not clear when the suspect would appear in court.

Under Zimbabwean law, suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The case has also renewed concern among community members about child safety within households and the need for early reporting when a child is at risk.

Child rights advocates have previously urged families and neighbours to speak up when they suspect abuse, warning that delays can expose children to harm.

Authorities are continuing investigations, and police said more information may be released as the case develops.
