HARARE — Allan Wilson Technical High School won the NASH Harare under-20 football championship after defeating Prince Edward School 5-3 on penalties at Allan Wilson School on Friday.
The victory earned the Sables the right to represent Harare province at the national tournament in September.
Allan Wilson and Prince Edward went to the penalty shootout after drawing 1-1 in the final.
Lennon Chikandamina scored the Sables’ goal before the hosts held their nerve to win the shootout.
The Allan Wilson Sables completed the provincial tournament unbeaten, recording three victories and one draw.
They opened their group campaign with a 1-0 victory over Lord Malvern School, with Chikandamina scoring the decisive goal.
Allan Wilson then drew 0-0 with Oxford School to secure a place in the semifinals.
The hosts defeated Churchill School 1-0 in the semifinal to set up the title decider against Prince Edward.
Team manager Mr Zaza praised the players for their performance throughout the tournament.
“The team’s performance was excellent,” Zaza said.
He identified goalkeeper Victor Nyemba, defender Salem Kamuteka and captain Carlson Shonhiwa as the team’s standout performers.
Zaza described Shonhiwa, who represents Simba Bhora, as “the engine of the team.”
Allan Wilson will now prepare to represent Harare at the national competition in September.
Zaza appealed for sponsorship to support the team’s preparations.
“We need to look for sponsorship in preparation for the nationals in September,” he said.
