A 36-year-old Rusape man was recently arrested for allegedly raping a 12-year-old.
The accused has since appeared before the Rusape Magistrates Court, where he was remanded in custody until the 8th of October.
The State’s case is that at approximately 1600 hours on 28 February, the accused encountered the complainant while she was en route to her grandmother’s residence to collect vegetables.
It is further alleged that the man pushed her onto a grassy patch and sexually assaulted her before escaping.
The child told her mother after returning home.
“On 1 March, the mother accompanied her to ZRP Rusape Rural to file a report, leading to the arrest,” the National Prosecuting Authority said in a statement.
The court ordered the accused to remain in custody while investigations continue.
Such cases are on the rise despite several arrests and convictions.
