Food and Nutrition Council holds two-day workshop to boost nutrition literacy in Zimbabwe’s schools

-

By Adley Munashe Muswati

The Food and Nutrition Council (FNC) recently held a two-day sector engagement workshop for the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to deepen nutrition literacy across the education system and strengthen multi-sector collaboration against malnutrition.

In a statement, FNC said the meeting aimed to enhance understanding of key nutrition concepts among education stakeholders and to familiarise participants with a “multi-system” approach that links schools with health, agriculture, water and sanitation, and social protection services.

Organisers emphasised that malnutrition is driven by interconnected factors and requires coordinated responses that extend beyond the classroom.

The workshop clarified the education sector’s role as a delivery platform for nutrition outcomes, highlighting opportunities in the curriculum, school feeding, health clubs, and community outreach.

Participants examined how teachers, school administrators, district education officers, and partners can integrate nutrition messaging into daily learning, promote healthy diets, and identify learners who may require referrals to health services.
