Police arrested a Glen View man after his Rottweiler attacked three people, killing an 8-month-old baby and injuring a 2-year-old child and a 26-year-old woman, the Zimbabwe Republic Police said Friday.
The male dog attacked the three at Riverside in Glen View 7 on Sept. 9. The baby suffered severe head injuries and died at the scene, police said.
Police identified the dog owner as John Nyandoro, 48.
He faces charges of culpable homicide and allowing a vicious dog to roam freely.
“The ZRP urges dog owners to secure their dogs at all times,” police said in a statement posted on X.
Police did not identify the victims or disclose the condition of the injured child and woman.
The attack prompted calls from some social media users for authorities to impose tougher restrictions on Rottweilers and other dogs they regard as dangerous.
“A national ban on this breed and other dangerous breeds is long overdue. Please act now,” X user Willard T. Mugadza wrote.
Other users also called for restrictions on some dog breeds, while several commenters argued that owners should bear greater responsibility for controlling their animals.
“Some dogs are not for the careless,” Fungai Dewere wrote, calling for justice and tougher punishment for negligent owners.
Titus Mapfumo urged owners to monitor their dogs closely and described the fatal attack as “very bad.”
Another user, Tinotenda Nguwi, questioned what authorities would do with the Rottweiler following the attack.
