The Mutare Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday sentenced a 26-year-old man to 20 years in prison after convicting him of repeatedly raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter.
The court found him guilty of offences committed in June 2025 at the family home in Chikanga.
The abuse came to light when the girl disclosed the assaults to her mother.
The mother immediately reported the case to the Zimbabwe Republic Police, leading to the man’s arrest.
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe said the sentence “reflects zero tolerance toward familial rape.”
The authority added that “child protection is a priority” and that courts will impose long custodial terms to safeguard children and deter such crimes.
The case comes at a time when there is nationwide concern over gender-based violence and child sexual abuse.
The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency reports that cases of domestic violence and assault continue to be persistently high.
Legal experts say enforcement gaps and social stigma still discourage reporting. “Sentences like this are crucial for building public confidence in the justice system,” said lawyer and child rights advocate Muchadehama Mandiita.
“It demonstrates that the courts are willing to uphold the rights of children and treat these abhorrent crimes with the seriousness they deserve. It encourages other survivors to come forward.”
International child rights organisations warn of the serious harm caused by such crimes.
“Sexual violence against children remains a grave violation of their rights, with devastating immediate and long-term impacts on their physical and mental health,” UNICEF said in a 2023 report.
