KWEKWE — A 42-year-old self-proclaimed prophet has been jailed for 15 years by the Kwekwe Regional Court for raping a 16-year-old girl after luring her to a fake “cleansing ceremony.”

It was the State’s case that the girl had gone to the man’s house on 29 September 2025 seeking prayers because she was unwell.

He later took her to a bushy area and pretended to perform a ritual.

“While they were there, he gave her a red cloth to tie around her waist and a concoction to drink. After drinking it, the victim felt dizzy, and the offender pushed her to the ground and raped her,” read part of the NPAZ statement in part.

The girl told her mother the next day, and a police report led to the arrest.

Abuse by self-styled spiritual leaders remains a concern.

Children and families are encouraged to seek help from trusted adults and report abuse to the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s Victim Friendly Unit or child-protection services.

Safe spaces at schools, churches and clinics are important to protect children and ensure quick reporting.
